Naughty November

Look out for our end-of-year awards, coming soon! But in the meantime...were you naughty in November? Or did Nanowrimo save you from the Claws of Doom?

So, in November, have you...

Submitted a short story, poem or other short fiction submission to a competition or magazine (one point for each submission)?

Submitted an article (one point per article, no matter how many mags the article is submitted to)?

Written and/or edited at least 4000 words (one point)?

Written more than the basic 4000 words (one additional point for each 2000 words of original writing (not editing)?

Edited more than the basic 4000 words (one additional point for each 5000 words of editing) ?

Outlined/plotted 4000 words or more (one point for each 4000)?

Beta-read read a fellow writer's novel and provided feedback (one point)?

Completed and published a new author website (one point)?

Written your query? (one point)

Written your synopsis? (one point)

Submitted a novel to an agent or editor? (Straight up to Koala Approves!)

(Anyone who's on Koala Approves while waiting for an agent response, remember that you must keep writing/editing/submitting short stories in the next month. Anyone sitting on their laurels drops down a stage. However, if an agent asks you to make changes to a novel, you get to stay on Koala Approves for the duration of your editing and negotiations, provided you get those changes to him/her in time and remember your manners. Ask for an extension or moan about your potential agent and you drop down a stage.)

A reminder... Points cannot be held over for a following month. The Koala wants consistent effort. The Koala is always right.

  2. So Nano gives you 24 points?

Not that I'm taking part. I'd be slashed to bits every month except November!

  3. This month:

    4 story submissions: 4 points
2 different essays, submittted: 2 points

Approx 5500 words written for 2nd novel: 1 point

Edited somewhere between 4K-6K: 1 point

So - 8 points total for November. Wow - keeping track like this really does help. Thanks for making us accountable, McK.

I felt so much busier than this - maybe it's the commute and the job and the holiday trip stuff this time of year that make me feel like I've accomplished more than this skinny list. (Honestly, when I sat down a few minutes ago to gather my info, I thought I'd have a lot more to report!)

In the back of my mind, I'm always reaching for the number Nine....

  4. Robin, 8 is a lot of points! The list only looks short because you are conflating things. The *real* list would say list all four submissions and two essays and to be truly precise, each word you wrote and edited...

    TOTAL: 11 points

  6. Wootie-woot for Sylvia! You have surely made The Koala purr! And Robin B, you did fantastically also--8 points is great! FairyHedgehog, winning NaNo deserves some extra hurrahs!

    Oh, er, and me? Hrm.

    8,700 words = 3 points

    *slinks under a rock*

  7. JJ, you're a sweetie!

Sylvia, I never realized I was a conflator - and I am gonna work on that!

    FH - congrats!!

  8. P.S. Congrats on those 11 points, Sylvia!

  9. It's OK, JJ. Koala claws don't hurt. Much.

Sylvia, I'm betting the novel I beta read this month was better than the one you read.

I'd be at a measley 2 points if I hadn't taken 5 minutes to make one novel submission. Looking at Robin and Sylvia's impressive lists, it doesn't seem right to count that submission. But I did get asked for a full this month. That I still haven't heard back about.

  10. Um, yeah, naughty, sort of.

Spent most of this month scheduling my time - which helped with daily life - decluttering and catching up on the stuff I've ignored so I could be writing.

So, yeah, that brings me back to the non-fiction article I just submitted so I could squeak in 1 point. I tried to submit a second one, but couldn't find a place that takes long ass ramblings.

Being where I am geographically, I have a little more time to shoot for one more point. I'll let you know if I get there.

Looks like lots of congrats to go around (except for here, of course).

  11. Eeked out one more point for editing. 2 whole points.

  12. November should be called NaSaFroKoClaMo (National Safe-from-Koala-Claws Month)!

4 submissions this month and a pathetic NaNo attempt(5 thousandish words). So 5 points.

Congrats to all the show-offs and over-achievers. ;) Hey, its my highest score, yet. I'm getting there!

  13. I wrote 4,000 words. That's it. And that was a struggle. Sorry, O eucalyptically annointed one. I suck this month:

    1 point.

On the bright side, the chances that you'll be able to put my tuchus on perma-smack for the month of December are high.

    Happy Christmas.

  14. Back to the Good for me in November. Wrote 20,000 new words, which I think means 9 points right there. Also plotted another 8,000 for 11.

I think I should also jump straight up to "approves" for flying 1200 miles specifically for a writing retreat.

Yeah, November was my good month after five months of just hanging on by the tips of my fingernails.

  15. Writing 21,562 words -- 9 pts.
    Editing 17,106 words -- 3 pts.
    Wrote 1 synopsis -- 1 pt.
    TOTAL = 13 pts, woot!

I was sort of, "Wait, what?" when I noticed I hadn't done any submissions this month, but getting a decent amount of writing done (first time all year) makes up for it. :)

    Angie, who loves November

  16. 10K words = 4 points

    2 article submissions = 2 points

6 points, I think. If I think of anything else I did I'll be back.

  17. Okay, I am skidding in with the news before the goblin comes by.

    1 short story submission

    3 8500 words written

    4 17k words edited

1 novel beta read (this is about a 18-20 hour task and feels like editing - are we understanding the term the same way?)

    9, so I get a Koala smile.

Oh, Phoenix, Phoenix, Phoenix. I've never been over to your place, have I?

Keep writing, honey, keep writing. You don't want to know the truth...
