Report in for July!

Yanno, chaps and chapesses, I'm flipping glad that I allowed one point for entry to Clarity of Night, because this month, I have...one point.

How about the rest of you? In July have you...

Submitted a short story, poem or other short fiction submission to a competition or magazine (one point for each submission)?

Submitted an article (one point per article, no matter how many mags the article is submitted to)?

Written and/or edited at least 4000 words (one point)?

Written more than the basic 4000 words (one additional point for each 2000 words of original writing (not editing)?

Edited more than the basic 4000 words (one additional point for each 5000 words of editing) ?

Outlined/plotted 4000 words or more (one point for each 4000)?

Beta-read read a fellow writer's novel and provided feedback (one point)?

Completed and published a new author website (one point)?

Written your query? (one point)

Written your synopsis? (one point)

Submitted a novel to an agent or editor? (Straight up to Koala Approves!)

(Anyone who's on Koala Approves while waiting for an agent response, remember that you must keep writing/editing/submitting short stories in the next month. Anyone sitting on their laurels drops down a stage. However, if an agent asks you to make changes to a novel, you get to stay on Koala Approves for the duration of your editing and negotiations, provided you get those changes to him/her in time and remember your manners. Ask for an extension or moan about your potential agent and you drop down a stage.)

A reminder... Points cannot be held over for a following month. The Koala wants consistent effort. The Koala is always right.

This is my month off -- lots of nothing. :/

Let's see. I was hoping to add to my total today, but it looks like I'll settle for getting next month off to a good start tomorrow.

1 point for CoN
1 point for the Tour de Writing. It's a weekly challenge in case anyone else wants to hop on.

3 points for 16,635 words edited.
0 points for 699 new words written (all for CoN - the original 250 and the expanded version, which I'm now tempted to turn into a novel - some day)

So that's 5 points overall. Whew. Getting back up there.

12,000 words written = 5 points
4 short story submissions = 4 points
3 contest submissions = 3 points

= 12 points

Woot! I managed a Koala Approves without a novel request! *boogies*

One Point for me too. Unless you feel generous and give me another point for holding a flash fiction contest on my site to promote Sarah's book. So do you feel generous?

I once again wrote about 2k. I'm so very laaaaaazy!

Look at that I have 1 point! (#69 - I think Jason may have done that on purpose)

Does it count that I wrote another entry that I didn't submit????

I had a little typo on my last comment, that should have been 12k not 21k. Anyway I've added a li bit to that. End of month total is 16k written.

Do professional papers written to be presented at conferences count even though they are never rejected? There is just a chance of complete humiliation and professional shunning if your theories are not well received.

THE KOALA IS A POET! THE GOBLIN SEEKS TO CURRY FAVOUR BY AWARDING THE KOALA A PRIZE PACK IN HONOUR OF THE KOALA'S POETRY!

Stunning use of rhyme there, Koala, plus I like the mental image that poem created. Ten agents, ah yes...

Pop by the contest post, pick which prize pack you want, and then email your choice and a mailing address to jen_deben "at" yahoo "dot" ca

I warn you that I'll need to send the package via El Cheapo SloMo service! The Eucalypt is faaaaaar...

I had another good month. 14 points and a phone conversation with an agent. Back to back good months nearly makes up for that year and a half I did nothing.

Believe it or not, I actually got in 16,000 words this month, which puts me at 7 points.

If not for acts of God, I'd have fucking finished... and I still can't access my wip. Grrrrrrrrr... so I'll be owing Precie and Aerin those turtles, if they'd ever get back to me with their addresses. (nudge, nudge)

I'm going to take August off. I'll report in if I make any points, but I don't see how the hell I'm going to get to write much, so I'll just put it out there now.

Laurel said...

Awww, Merry.

Here's me: CoN = 1, though disappointing as I didn't make 40's club.

New words: 21K = 8.5

Beta read 1 novel = 1

10.5 total. That week the kids were out of town really paid off.

In July, I sent three queries for my novel, so that takes me up to approves, right?

I also rewrote my query (again) - not sure if that counts for anything. Started on but haven't finished my synopsis.

Also edited roughly 15,000 words, which is 3 points and no leftovers.

Do I need to count anything when I'm querying actively? Not sure, McK.

Phoenix Sullivan said...

Ooh, Travis - a phone call with an agent? That sounds good!

I wrote a piece for CoN that I didn't submit, so no points.

I beta read a full novel, but only commented on half of it (sorry, Rob!), so no points.

Someone credited me for helping their book get accepted at an epub based in large part on the query rewrite I did for them, but I assume that's no points, too.

I am still actively querying, so that gives me an auto approve. But I've also been doing a lot of whining and slacking, so I posted an "Almost Happy" badge on my site this time around.

Will August be the month I run out of agents and publishers to query? Stay tuned!

Wow, lots going on for you all!

I'm counting total words written, regardless of whether submitted. For my WIP, it will take some time before it is as that point, so I'd have no points at all while drafting.

So my wordcount is based on words written, I've not submitted anything new in July.

Wordcount: 5,252 words on WIP, 3,177 on short stories: +3
Editing: 5,000 words: +1
Short Story Submissions: +2
Sent novel query to 1 agent: +approves

(why yes, I found someone to query specifically to move up the ranks of Koala Approves, what's wrong with that?)

Precie said...

Merry, dear, under the circumstances, you DON'T owe me turtles! Acts of God call for an exception. I just hope you can access your wip again soon.

In other news...yay for everyone earning Koala points!

I suppose I did nothing writing-wise this month. I could count it as the month off, I suppose.

PD Singer said...

Erm, late again, but...
6 14k written
2 2 short stories subbed
so, 8

Kate said...

If I wrote anything in July, I can't remember. I definitely didn't submit anything. And now I'm going into hiding from any and all furry sapiens.

PJD said...

I suck. Only one point for my Clarity of Night entry. I am claiming July as my month off even though August gets worse, and September will be a nightmare.

jjdebenedictis said...

Kate: And goblins! Hide from goblins too! *clacks toe-nail pincers*

Travis: Ooh, phone call from an agent does sound good!

Do I lose a point for posting my point count in the wrong (i.e., "The McKoala Month") thread?

If I keep this up, I'll be in the minus.

McKoala said...

Hm, a few months off here, and some good efforts. Tsk, tsk to the lazybones!

JJ, such diligence! And the whole bribery thing. Effective. Aniket, I'll think about it. Janey, whole point! Iasa, nope, not fiction, sorry. Travis, excellent, you're officially in. Merry, you're at the mercy of the Turtle Squad.

Questions - Robin, one query gets you up to approves, so no need to count, unless for interest.

Sylvia - that's the idea! Submit for approval!

Run, Kate, run! Pete, I'd take your point, just in case you roll up with a zero in your coming months!

D'oh, typos.

Ahem. Please congratulate your alter ego from me on her honourable mention in the Clarity of Night competition. Yay, <CENSORED>!

This, I fear, is the month my buttocks are torn from my pelvis by crazed swipes of marsupe talon.

1 for CON
1 for outlines
1 for subs

So that's 3 — the unlucky number which, up until Maurice Gibb died, was known as THE BEE GEES NUMBER.

Gulp.

Phoenix Sullivan said...

But wait, Whirl. Wasn't your sub for your novel? If so, then you've auto-zoomed right to approves.

Ignore me! Listen to the lady with the lizards!

I'm claiming this as month off. August is going to be a very good month. It is already shaping up well.
