Publisher's Marketplace

The late, great Miss Snark would slay me with her stiletto if she read this, but my Publisher's Marketplace membership is about to expire, and I'm thinking I may just cancel. I feel I'm not using it, other than to receive the detailed updates and, to be honest, the plain old free updates would probably be fine for me.

It's not that I don't want to be published, it's just that I want to save money and right now this just seems like a waste of it. But, before I kill the membership, am I missing something? Should I be using it in some way that I'm not? i.e. do you have a membership, do you love it, and why?!

Um, yup, must update that sidebar, but FYI, I'm still smacking myself down. Daily.

I get the freebies for now. There was talk about getting a one year membership at the right time and making it worth the cost, but I haven't heard that talk in quite awhile. And now, of course, can't remember why.

I had a membership last year - which was too soon for me, for where I was. Cancelled it last fall when life looked pretty stormy, world-recession-wise, and we were doing the battening down the hatches prep, to be on the safe side.

I'll start it up again (and MediaBistro as well, maybe) when I truly need it. For me, it will be a while, since I'm drilled down editing and doing short stories right now (and enjoying that, actually).

Bottom line - if you're actually gonna actively use it, keep it. If not, now that you know how it works (I'm sure you scoured all over it, as I did) - just start it up again when you're ready, since it's so easy to do.

I've not looked into this, but I suppose the thing is that if you haven't made a great deal of use of it, there might be better things to spend your cash on. Stuff for your new mantlepiece and such...

I use it when I query (saw your name there from such and such sale, thought my project might fit your needs), which comes in spurts but hasn't been in a shamefully long while. (This afternoon. I swear it. Hold me to that!) I also maintain a webpage there that gets a wee bit of actual traffic, not just bots. But you have to decide what works for you. If you're not querying, I don't see how it's all that useful, and I do get tired of the constant stream of deals emails. Really should shut that off.

I had a membership for almost two years, and cancelled it last spring. It wasn't doing anything for my (ahem) writing career. A bit on the expensive side, plus seeing other people get deals got to be a bit old.
I'll renew it if I'm ever published... We should all chip in and get a group membership. Let's call it "Koala Claws" or some such.
:-)

Nobody's raving, are they? I think I'll let it go for now. Thanks all!
